i just use http://www.chatab.com it’s an IM portal where you can sign into your MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Facebook, or others. Very simple and no download is needed.

if you’re offline then your fren send it as a email or check your setting..

check the settings.. theres something in there that lets msn send you messages to your email inbox when your offline.

Depending on your settings, if someone tries to send you a message while you’re offline, then it will be sent as an e-mail.
